APRIL FLOWERS & GARDEN TOURS

On Saturday and Sunday I went on the Mary Lou Heard's Garden Tour.  It was a beautiful weekend for garden tours.  There were so many gardens to see that it is held on both days.

We only went to one on Saturday and it was  a English Country garden.  Beautiful roses, foxgloves, delphiniums, camellias and larkspurs.  In the center of the rose garden is a lovely three tiered fountain.  The hummingbirds love the  fuchsia`baskets.  A very large avocado tree and gazebo shade some of the back yard.  There is a stunning Eden climbing rose bush over the trellis in the front year.

The rest of the pictures are in the back yard.

This is Jerri Cunningham's 1916 California Craftsman home, located in Old Towne Orange.  There is a 100 year old avocado tree  planted when the house was built.  The Potager, or kitchen garden is a must see with a fresh vegetable stand and there is a lovely garden room which was added on later by Jerri..  There is also a "English Potting Shed" filled with collectibles throughout the years.
Jerri has been featured in Romantic Homes Magazine a few years ago.

The front porch

This is a side view of the front porch

English Garden Shed
Inside of Garden Shed a lot of vintage items.

This is the garden room.

Don't you just love that old desk .... and all the lovely vintage linens.

Under the avocado tree - what a great place to sit and have tea or to take a nap.

This next house once belong to a big farm and was sub-divided - the house is the original home

This is a beautiful pond cascading down and the little house to the left was the foreman's home.  The owners made a guest cottage out of it.

My camera's battery needed charging so I didn't get to take more pictures.  We toured two more gardens and I sure was pooped when we finished.

This is my black iris - it's such a deep purple that it looks black.

Well, I hope that I didn't bore you will all these pictures, but I just love seeing all the beautiful flowers in bloom.  My garden has been dead headed and waiting for new roses to appear.

I hope you enjoyed this post and will leave a comment.  We (Waldo and Lili) all love reading them.

    1. I liked Jerri Cunningham's garden very much, but the one I really loved I couldn't take pictures because the camera died. I have been to these a couple times before and it is always such a joy to see what new things they have in the garden. I would love one of those little garden sheds and fix it up.
Have a great Mothers Day - I know Katie will be giving lots of kisses.

    1. Wish you could have gone with us. There were a few gardens in San Juan Capistrano, but was a little to far for me. Jerri Cunningham's home is really very pretty and a true Ca Craftsman's house. She had painted a Hollyhocks sign above the door, couldn't see it very well due to the vine covering the shed.
Wishing you a wonderful Mothers Day and get ready for the HOT weather again.

    1. Thanks so much Jane, it really was a lovely day. Jerri's garden is one of my favorite's. She does many lectures and has been featured numerous times in the paper and in Romantic Homes. When you enter her garden you are taken back in time to the early 20's with all the old favorite plants. Hollyhocks, roses and hydrangea's - truly magical.

  8. Hello Mary! I am so glad you came to see my irises this evening. I read your post earlier in the afternoon and fell in love with your black iris. It is a true beauty. I don't always get to comment anymore but my kiddos are asleep now so I can catch up on commenting. I am also impressed with all of your roses in bloom! The California sunshine is amazing. 1. I feel honored that you took the time away from your busy schedule to read my post and comment. I love iris - I have so many different colors. I noticed today that some of them are changing colors, especially the pink, red and butterscotch ones. I think they are going back to when they were grafting them. Like a rose does sometimes - back to what they rooted them with other roses.
      Have a wonderful Mothers Day.

    1. I really enjoyed the gardens - they were all so special and it was a beautiful day also. You can tell that each gardener was so proud of their accomplishments. We had terrible winds all week before the tours and they kind of beat up some of the plants. But, being real gardeners we knew what havoc the winds did to our gardens. I could take in a garden tour each week. There were 43 gardens on tour Saturday and Sunday, but being that I have COPD I could only get to 5 of them, but I did spend a lot of time taking in all the beauty that surrounded us.
Thanks so much for stopping by Poppy, you are a dear sweet person. I wish you a wonderful Mothers Day.

What beautiful gardens. I love that little shed- oh to have a little cottage in the garden of my cottage!

There were 43 gardens on tour, but 5 was all I could take in. You should come down next year.

    1. Thanks so much Judy for your kind comments. I love going on the garden tours, but I sure do get pooped if it's hot. I like seeing what everyone else is planting and what their design is.

  58. Mary, these gardens are pretty, and I especially love the inside of that little cottage with the vines growing on it. But, from what I've seen your garden should be on a tour. Every time I see photos of your garden, I am blown away by the beauty. laurie

Just wanted you to know that I actually have dark brown hair. It looked a little blonder in the first picture, as I had lighter hair when I was a young girl. Thanks for stopping by. I always smile whenever I see that you have visited.

    Have a nice Sunday, Mary.

  63. I just met you tonight over on Kris' blog. I love this post. I was raised in LaHabra Heights and truly enjoy seeing all of the garden's. Brings back some great memories of my childhood and young adult life. I'm in AZ now therefore I don't have the beautiful gardens that I remember. Blessings, Cindy

    1. Thanks Carol for your sweet comments. I love toile fabric and have it in almost every room. Black/white in den and red and white in my bedroom. I made the drapes in all of the rooms. I found the chairs and bench in the living & dining rooms at Stein Mart on sale Yea - great price.
I'm just like you love colors inside and out.
Have a great restful week. You should see my "TO DO LIST" - it will take a lot of time.

  65. Hi Mary, loved your spotlight over at Kris'. I'm your newest follower, and Kris featured me on Feb 1 if you'd like to know more about me. I love your work history - that's a job (events mgr) I always thought would be fantastic. We have a few things in common - gardening, junking, and geography...you were born just 2.5 hrs away from where I live in West Virginia. :) I look forward to reading more of your blog.
