SPRING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

SPRING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Welcome to my Spring Garden

Spring came early this year in the middle of March, due to the warm weather and lots of rain.  After 6 years of very little rain everyone lost lots of plants.  I lost about 10 rose bushes.

This rose bush is a David Austin climber and it is stunning and the smell WOW

One of my beautiful iris plants.  Really bloomed early.

Love to hear the sound of moving water from the fountain - it's so relaxing.

This is my plant "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow", each day it is a different color.

These plants are my Bells of Ireland  and they come back each spring.

Looking at my gazebo - it needs a hair cut. All of the above photo;s are from the back yard.

Nap time for the dogs and me too.

My son Shaun and his girl friend Kim.  They stopped by to take me to dinner as they were off to Costa Rico the next day for Kim's Birthday.  We had a wonderful dinner and I loved my steak. Had a grand time with them - they are so much in love and cute together.  She is a head nurse in the Labor and Delivery Department of a near by hospital.

Just a few of my beautiful Iris's  they came so early this year and their colors are so vibrant.

Another one of my David Austin  climbers in the front side yard.  They sure smell so good.

This is the Eden rose and its a climber

Red Eden rose

Porch all dressed up for Easter.

This Iris is such a soft lavender color.  Wished they stayed longer that 2 days.  I wait all year for them to bloom and then here and gone.

This is a wild flower and I forget the name of it.  They sure are pretty and fill the garden beds so nicely.

These pictures are shots of my front yard and I would like to get rid of all the grass and just have roses and flowers in the front yard.

My Chicago Peace rose with so many buds on the plant.

That is the front yard with all the roses and iris in bloom.  Hope that you liked my Spring garden.

Today was the Fullerton Garden Tour and I didn't go on it as there wasn't a lot of gardens that I liked.
Next weekend is the Mary Lou Heards Garden Tour.  I am hoping that I can get to one of the days.  But they said rain next weekend, we will see.

So that's what i have been up to.  I just shopped the house and re-arranged my vignette with different items.  Will do another post next week with my shopping spree.

I don't seem to have a lot of time lately.  I have been taking my neighbor to therapy twice a week.  She fell and really hurt herself and can hardly walk.  Then with my Doctor visits and grocery shopping - the week is gone  and I am pooped. I also take a friend shopping too as she does not have a car. I am
the driver for the neighborhood. Doesn't take much to get me tired, then I sit down and read or nap for a little while and get up and finish my chores.

I hope all of you are having a beautiful Spring and your gardens are amazing.

Waldo, Lili and I thank you for stopping by to visit with us and hopefully you will leave us a comment.  I'm off for my nap - the dogs are calling me.

  2. Mary, I forget from year to year how beautiful your gardens are and all the pretty roses and flowers you have. I have never seem that Yesterday/Today/Tomorrow plant. That is a really pretty one. I can't believe all the work you have put into those gardens over the years. I am sure the grass does make it more work but I do like the looks of the grass "island" in your flower beds.
Great picture of Shaun and his sweet girl. They look happy together and she looks like a lovely person...thank God!
Love to you and your sweet pets. Hope you can get to a garden tour! xo Diana

    1. I always love when I hear from you - you are my very first blogger to comment on my first post. So glad that you like this post.

I do have a gardener that comes weekly and cuts the grass, blow's all the dirt on the patio and porch and leaves. He will do other chores but I have to remind him what to do, as I pay dearly for this service.

I am surprised that I have any blooms on the roses with the wind we had from Thursday on. It is letting up, but sure was terrible.

I carried all those pavers in and laid them my self. Shaun and his friend Duke did help with some. When I purchased the house there was NOTHING in the front or back yard. I have a lot of money invested in the landscaping. I love setting out there in the morning, in my nightgown having coffee and talking on the phone. You will have to send me your phone # and I will call you up - doesn't cost extra.

Will send email about my interview with Dee and her daughter. They seem so nice and caring - we will see.

Have a terrific week and have fun with your vets.

      Lots of hugs,
      Mary

  3. Oh Mary where to begin with your beautiful post. The garden flowers are stunning. The rain and nice weather have gifted your garden this year. Such beautiful blooms. Love seeing Waldo and Lili enjoying and doing so well. Such cuties. Your Son and his girlfriend Kim are a cute couple. Such a sweet pic of the two of them. Glad they came by to spend some time with you and have dinner. Enjoy that beautiful garden. Makes me excited that we will be seeing flowers in about a month around here. Happy New Week.

    1. Oh Kris, so glad that you enjoyed the post. I will have to admit that this year the flowers are stunning and all the roses are blooming or have finished blooming. Time to prune the roses so I will get more blooms in a month.

Shaun and Kim are at Kelly's tournament, It has been going on for the last two days. I am hoping that she gets some blue ribbons and doesn't get thrown off the horse. She is quite the rider, even has a little job at the ranch two days a week saddling the horses, and brushing them. She wants a horse so bad, but they are just to expensive - they lease one. Who knew that you could lease a horse. LOL

I can hardly wait to see all the magic you work on your new home. i know it will be amazing and your flowers will be stunning.

Take care my friend and have a wonderful week.

      Hugs,
      Mary

  4. Oh Mary, what a pleasure to visit you again. It's been a long time.
Isn't it wonderful to have green in our lawns back and to be able to water a bit without being anxious. Your garden is gorgeous..and cozy and a place one would like to spend the afternoon just reading a good book.
I hope I get to see you again one of these days. If you are ever up this way, please do stop by.
What a handsome son you have..and his girl is lovely.

  5. What a wonderful post. Your garden looks spectacular! I am very impressed with the Bells of Ireland, I didn't know we could grow them, far less having them reseed. Something new for me to try next year. Thank You!

I want to take out the rest of my grass too but it takes a bit of work. I have found that for me the best way is to lay down layers of newspaper and then cover it with mulch. This seems to work, but it takes a while before you can plant.

Have a great week and thank you for sharing your lovely garden.

  6. Mary,

I am in awe of your lovely garden...all the roses and the iris. I'm thinking of planting iris here at the lake, not sure now that you say they only bloom two days. Still, you have such a variety and abundance of gorgeous greenery. Your front yard is amazing...compared to the homes across the street, I see a magical place that must get a lot of views from passerby's! And...I'm so happy to see Waldo and Lili doing well!

Your son Shaun, and his gal look very happy together. I know you must have had a lovely time together. You have another son who has your granddaughter, right? But Shaun live close to you?

Thank you for the tour of your garden. It makes me happy yo know you live in all that splendor!!!

  7. Oh Mary, your garden makes my heart sing. And I just did a post about the Rose Garden right down the street from my house. The rain has made your roses grow beautifully, along with your other flowers. I love your little chair and iron table and bunnies. I miss my garden so much, Mary. And I hope to have one again someday. Your purple Iris is such a pretty color. Your back yard is a peaceful place to be. I could sit out there for a long time. I love the look of your brick fence too, and that red rose is just for me. I enjoyed browsing through all your pictures. You have a really charming garden, Mary.

    Happy May!

    1. Thank you so very much for your kind comments. I love my garden so much and last year I lost interest due to not being able to water. I saved as much as I could for my roses, but still lost some. One of my favorites is Abe Lincoln and it was only a couple year old and it died. I have left it think just maybe the roots will grow again. Since you love red roses, look it up at a nursery and you will just love it. The smell is heavenly.

Just came in from the garden, watered the back yard, filled up the fountain, and bird baths.

Have a wonderful week Sheri and enjoy Spring.
Thanks so much for stopping by.

Once again. its great meting you and I will be following your blog. Have a wonderful week.

  9. Mary - What gorgeous flowers!! I've never had iris until last year when I moved into this home and they are so pretty. I have had purple, shades of purple, purple and yellow, deep purple, white and last week had pink ones. They are so pretty.

Thanks for sharing all of your yards with us. The yellow Peace rose is my very favorite rose of all time.

Tell Lili and Waldo that Bella sends her love. We found out this week that she has some arthritis in her hips. She's been having trouble jumping up and down off of the bed. But, they put her on some meds and she's so much better. Thank goodness. I don't know what I'd do without her company.

    Have a great week.

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by Judy and so glad that you liked my gardens. Boy the rain sure helped my garden this year. the flowers are so vibrant in color and twice the number of blooms on the roses. And I didn't even show all of my roses.

So glad that Bella is doing well on her medication. Waldo is having a little difficulty, but he still gets up on the bed. Good thing I have a Queen because they both want to get on it. Lili is 9 or 10 and Waldo is 12 or 13. The vet wasn't sure of their exact age. I know what you mean, I love my dogs and they sure are happy that have retired and are home with them most of the day.

Hope that you weather is good. I always worry about your tornado.

Waldo and Lili send hugs to Bella.

  11. Hi Mary,
I'm in Southern CA also (San Diego) so I know your heartache of not being able to water, then having weeks of rain and loosing plants and now it's up in the high 80's again. We resorted to pulling out all our grass (dead from no water), and putting rocks everywhere. Ugh! I'm getting into container gardening with beautiful plants so I don't feel like I'm in the desert (no offense to anyone living in the desert!). Your garden is lovely and fun!

    1. Thanks for your comments and stopping by my blog. So nice to meet you Vickie. I love San Diego. I lived there for a couple of years (50 years) again.

I didn't have the heart to change my garden. I was letting my grass die and was going to plant more native plants, but then came the rain. I really wish we would have rain once a week.

      Enjoy your week and garden.

You said you'd like to get rid of all the grass, but I found the grassy walkway really adds to the beauty of your yard. It gives a place for the eyes to rest, kind of like blank spaces in paintings. Just a thought. Have a great weekend, you deserve it.

PS - Rogers Gardens is nothing like the one that you went to. IT does have lovely grounds and they offer some free classes. Your iris and roses are so beautiful and the flower you can't remember the name of is Valerian, or the Garden Gate flower as my grandmother referred to it. A think a bird dropped a seed of it to me from my neighbors so it is coming up all over the garden. I am having more of it each year and I don't mind a bit. It is colorful and we cut it back when it is through blooming and it will come back and bloom again in just a short time. I don't need to mention again that if a plant doesn't come back on its own, then it doesn't belong in my garden!!..Happy Thursday and Happy Mother's Day..xxoJudy

  31. Mary!

My goodness! I can smell those gorgeous David Austin climbers all the way from Crete! How pretty all your flowers are! And I know from experience that they demand a lot of work - I mean, TLC! You, my dear friend, have bestowed upon them so much of that, and it shows.

I've never heard of 'Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow', but I am intrigued, and must 'google' it. The red wildflowers are beautiful; I have a weakness for wildflowers, since they grow all on their own, without anyone's help, here in the meadows that make my walks bearable when I'm too tired even to blink. I am also surprised about the iris, lasting only two days. But, it is your roses that always capture my full attention and I aspire to grow them as beautifully as you do. Right now, it's only one little pot of a pink/yellow/orange combination, but their scent is strong, just like the ones I remember in my childhood.

Shaun and Kim are adorable! So lovely that they stopped by to spend some quality time with you. I know you have some major decisions to make and I look forward to your email when you have news, or simply if you want to chat.

So glad you had a good time with son and his girl...hope their trip will be full of fun for them.
Thank you so much for your prayers for Mr. Sweet..he is gaining strength after 3 weeks in a rehab facility....

I am really busy now in several directions and using IG has helped to stay in touch with everyone and less time on the computer. It's been so long blogging now and after 10 years, changes just happen.

  44. Oh goodness Mary your garden is so beautiful - glad to see you still have so many roses left after the drought. Everything is lovely - the little wild flower bush is so charming. You have so much space to grow your flowers and display your fun collections. Have a lovely day. Erin

  45. Your garden is lovely, Mary. I love all your roses. Someday I hope to have a rose garden. I can't put them in until we have a fenced-in area to keep the deer out. I've been so busy the past 2 weeks that I haven't had a chance to visit blogs and return comments. Just now getting around to it. Thanks so much for your comment on my post regarding starting geraniums from cuttings. I hope your start is successful. xo ~ Nancy

  47. Hi Mary....first off....thanks for stopping by to say hi. Your flowers are so amazing. California weather is usually more temperate than here in AZ and it shows with your gardens. I especially love the arbors...would love to have one here. Your pics are inspiring me! haha

  50. Mary, I loved hearing your story, I didn't realize you grew up on a farm. It sounds like you worked hard through the years.....and you even helped with canning jams and other foods. You're right, kids now do not know what they're missing. It was a wonderful time for me working on that farm, and although it was only a summer, I'll never forget it. Here is a quote that I was going to add to my post but didn't get around to it.

"I had rather be on my farm,
than be Emperor of the world."

    ~George Washington

Try to stay cool from this summer heat we're having, Mary. : )

  51. Wow Mary you have some beautiful gardens. Love the roses! I don't have draught to deal with but the winters can be so brutal that I can lose roses to that so I don't have many. I hope the room rental works out- it's a great idea for extra income. I am sure you are enjoying the new 50" tv! You are a blessing to your neighbors- I hope your next door neighbor can recover and feel better soon. Thank you for your recent visits- I appreciate them all!
